Twitter’s Mayhem as Prominent Accounts Hacked

Today, 280 characters are not enough to explain the all-encompassing chaos that continues to grip Twitter. In a recent attack, hackers got hold of influential Twitter accounts including Joe Biden, Apple, Barack Obama, and Elon Musk as part of what appears to be a BTC scam.

What went on here: Hackers posted from influential individuals and accounts prompting readers to claim their BTC rewards by clicking on a link, or prompted audiences to send their BTC to a wallet address in order to double their bitcoins. The compromised twitter account also includes corporations and exchanges including Apple, Coinbase, Gemini, Coinbase, Binance, Uber, and more.

The Response

The hackers managed to trick people into sending bitcoins to a wallet address. According to bitcoin’s ledger, a total of 12.58 bitcoins, worth almost $116,000, were sent to the wallet address.

While specifics are still being worked out, analysis reveals that attackers managed to leverage an internal admin tool of Twitter to gain access to the high profile accounts. The attack was soon confirmed by Twitter’s own handle, which acknowledged it as a ‘security breach’. After the attack, the social media giant disabled blue tick accounts from posting any tweet.

Following the attack, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter released a tweet saying, “We all feel terrible this happened. We're diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened,”

What happens next: After the incident, shares of Twitter fell nearly by 3%. Further investigations of what exactly unfolded are still in progress!
